Woman shot dead, child injured in Bandarban

The incident took place in Shamukjhiri area around 5:30pm on Friday

A woman has been shot dead and her seven-year-old child injured in gunfire by unknown individuals in Rowangchhari upazila of Bandarban.

The incident took place in Shamukjhiri area around 5:30pm on Friday, according to locals and police.

The deceased was identified as Shantilata Tanchangya, 35, a resident of the upazila's Nathingjhiri area.

Her husband Rangowai Tanchangya said Shantilata and their daughter were shot when they were returning home from the jhum field. Shantilata died on the spot.

He and locals said no one saw who fired the shots through the trees, which spread mass panic in the locality.

Bangladesh Army personnel later rescued the child and admitted her to Bandarban Sadar Hospital.

Rowangchhari police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Touhid Kabir confirmed Shantilata's death from gunshots, and said her body was kept at the Rowangchhari Upazila Health Complex.

He said they were working to find out who fired the fatal shots.

On July 7, six members of Jana Samhati Samiti (Reformist-MN Larma) were shot to death at Baghmara of Bandarban Sadar upazila.

Among the dead, Ratan Tanchangya was the party's Bandarban unit president, David Marma, a member of its executive committee, and Bimol Kanti Chakma, vice president of the central committee.

Three others, Robin Chakma, Ripon Tripura, and Gyan Tripura, were the members of Jubo Samiti, front organization of Jana Samhati Samiti (Reformist-MN Larma).
