Update : 09 Jun 2020, 11:45 PM

Noted physician and founder of Rahat Anwar Hospital in Barisal, Dr Anwar Hossain, died from Covid-19 infection at a hospital in Dhaka early Tuesday, after being turned away by three other hospitals.

Anwar Hossain was admitted to Badda's AMZ Hospital where he passed away in intensive care at 2:45 am Tuesday.

The hospital later confirmed his death from Covid-19 infection after his sample came back as positive.

Advocate Laskar Nurul Huq, one of the directors and legal advisor of Rahat Anwar Hospital, confirmed the matter.

He said that Dr Anwar was feeling unwell but continued to treat patients at his hospital and performed surgery on Sunday night.

As Anwar fell ill and had difficulty breathing the next morning, he was flown to Dhaka in an air ambulance.

Around three hours of searching for ICU accommodation at different hospitals, his condition deteriorated even more.

He was later taken to AMZ Hospital in Badda where he died in the ICU.

Dr Sudip Haldar, president of Indoor Doctors Association of Sher-E-Bangla Medical College (SBMCH) acknowledged that there was no Intensive Care Unit (ICU) specialist at SBMCH. “Dr Anwar had to be sent to Dhaka for better treatment, but unfortunately he passed away there, failing to get proper treatment in time."

Anwar's first funeral prayer was held at Rahat Anwar Hospital on Tuesday. He was later laid to rest at his ancestral home in Jhalakathi's Nakta village after another funeral prayer.
