The police have conducted a drive at the largest wholesale drug market at Hazari Lane in Chittagong city and arrested two people for overcharging and hoarding disinfectants.
The arrestees were identified as Subhas Dev, 45, and Shuvo Dey, 22.
During the drive on Saturday evening, the law enforcers also seized 185 litres of Savlon and Hexol, said Mohammad Mohsin, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kotwali police station.
The police, in their drive, found that Savlon was selling at Tk500 instead of Tk220, while Hexol was selling at Tk250 instead of Tk200, he said.
The OC said some unscrupulous traders hiked the prices of disinfectants by creating an artificial crisis in the market exploiting the ongoing coronavirus situation.
Earlier on the day, the Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) announced stern action will be taken if the medicines are sold at higher prices.
The CMP authorities also requested people to contact the nearest police station or CMP hotline number (018-80808080) if any drugstore in the city charges higher prices for them.
CMP Additional Deputy Commissioner (Public Relations) Abu Bakar Siddique said that legal action will be taken against the drug traders based on complaints in this connection.
