Bandarban district administration has decided to lockdown three of its popular tourist centres—Lama, Alikadam and Naikhongchhari upazila.
The decision comes as a means to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus (Covid-19), with the first patients having tested positive for the virus in Cox’s Bazar, said Additional Deputy Commissioner Md Shamim Hossain on Tuesday, while confirming the matter to Dhaka Tribune.
Meanwhile, army personnel have already been deployed and they have been raising awareness through leaflets and public service announcements since the afternoon.
Besides, they are shutting down shops, hotels, and shopping malls in the city.
Bandarban District Council says the health department has also trained 300 volunteers to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus in the district.
Bandarban Hill District Council Chairman Kyaw Shwe Hla distributed disinfectant sprayers, gloves, jackets and other gears and tools among volunteers at the district council auditorium on the same day.
Chairman Kyaw Shwe Hla said trained volunteers will work to raise public awareness about the novel coronavirus in seven upazilas of the district, as well as spray disinfectant in every populated areas.
According to the health department, as of Tuesday 50 people have been sent to quarantine in Bandarban. Of them, 3 are in hospital and the others in home. Also, people who are returning from overseas are being monitored.
