A suspected Rohingya drug dealer has been killed in a reported gunfight with Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in Cox’s Bazar.
The incident occurred in Palong Khali union of Ukhiya upazila, early Monday morning.
The deceased is Md Jubayer Mia, 22.
Confirming the matter to Dhaka Tribune, BGB Cox's Bazar 34 Commanding Officer Lt Col Ali Haider Azad Ahmed, said: "The BGB was tipped off that a huge shipment of yaba pills was about to enter Bangladesh through the Rahmoterbil border in Ukhiya, Cox's Bazar.
"Early in the morning yesterday, four to five people from Myanmar (allegedly drug traffickers) were entering Bangladesh. Seeing the BGB personnel, the drug carriers started firing. In retaliation, the BGB also started firing at them. Facing a barrage of bullets from the BGB, the drug carriers fled the scene and went inside Myanmar."
"One of the drug peddlers, Jubayer, got injured during the gunfight. He was taken to the Ukhiya Health Complex, where the on duty doctors pronounced him dead. The body has been handed over to the police," he added.
Ukhiya police station OC Marjina Akter, said: "The body of the deceased was sent to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital for autopsy around 12pm."
