No steps to stop gas leaks in B’baria

Locals in the vicinity are in fear of a fire hazard

Update : 07 Feb 2020, 11:11 PM

A gas pocket that was breached during the installation of a tube well at a school premise in Brahmanbaria’s Kasba upazila continued to leak on Friday.

The Shaheed Minar, a boundary wall, and a number of trees of Sher E Bangla High School in Bidyanagar have collapsed due to the continued gas pressure.

Meanwhile, neither Petrobangla nor any other concerned have yet taken any security measures to avert fire-related incidents or casualties.

Local residents adjacent to the school are moving their belongings in fear.

Zahra Begum, resident of a house next to the school, said, “The gas along with sand began to spew from a tube well pit since Wednesday morning. We're very scared. I do not know what to do.”

Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration (Bapex) General Manager Alamgir Hossain visited the gas leak site and said that they collected samples for analysis.

To a question, he replied: “This is not a gas reservoir. Gas layers are found at 2,000-2,500 meters deep underground. At 540ft it might just be methane or a gas pocket. However, we will monitor the site for the next 10-15 days and formulate the next plan of action.”
