Two suspected yaba dealers were killed in a reported gunfight with Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) in Cox’s Bazar.
The incident occurred at Palongkhali union of Ukhiya upazila on Friday.
The deceased are Mohammad Siddik, 30, and Mohammad Shahjahan, 36. Both of them were from the Balukhali Rohingya camp.
BGB Cox’s Bazar 34 Commanding Officer Lt Col Ali Haider Azad Ahmed said: "Acting on a tip off, a patrolling BGB team tried to stop the smugglers when they entered the Nalbania point with a shipment of yaba tablets.
“Seeing the law enforcement, the smugglers opened fire on BGB, prompting us to fire back, and triggered a gunfight."
The two smugglers were shot and injured during the gunfight. They were taken to the hospital in critical condition where the on-duty doctors pronounced them dead, he added.
BGB recovered a locally made rifle, two rounds of cartridges, and 40,000 yaba tablets from the scene.
Lt Col Ali said a case in this connection is underway.
Ukhiya police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abul Monsur said: "We recovered the bodies of the two Rohingya men. Their bodies were sent to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy."
