BMP: 151 women, children victim of violence in Narayanganj

This year 47 women and children were raped in Narayanganj

Bangladesh Mohila Parishad (BMP)Narayanganj unit members said 151 women and children were victims of violence in the past 11 months in the area.

BMP briefed their findings to journalists on Monday, stating that they have recorded reports of violence from complaints made directly by victims and various newspapers.

This year 47 women and children were raped in Narayanganj. 

Among them five were gang-raped.  

A total of 13 women were killed. 

Four women were killed by their husbands over dowry. As many as 22 women were sexually assaulted. 

The rest of the 151 women faced other forms of violence.

Lakshmi Chakrabarti, BMP Narayanganj district president, said: "Narayanganj is no different from the rest of the country in terms of the rising trend of violence against women. 

Sexual violence is more common in the Bandar, Rupganj and Araihazar upazilas. 

Most of the victims are garments workers, teenagers and toddlers.

"Although empowerment of women has been increasing in Bangladesh, there is lack of security for women and children. The rate of violence against women this year is comparatively higher in Narayanganj than the last year."

Among others Anjuman Ara Akhsir, vice president from BMP's central office and General Secretary Hasina Parvin of Narayanganj BMP were present at the briefing.
