70 gold bars, 7,183 cartons of foreign cigarettes seized at Chittagong airport

Members of Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) have seized 70 gold bars and 7,183 cartons of foreign made cigarettes in separate drives at Shah Amanat International Airport in Chittagong.

Both the drives were conducted on Friday, reports BSS.

The CIID officials seized the gold bars worth about Tk4 crore from a flight of Salam Airlines that came from Muscat of Oman around 11:45am, the airport Manager Wing Commander Sarwar-E-Zaman said.

On a tip-off, the officials recovered the gold bars, weighing 8.17kg, from the toilets of the flight in an abandoned condition, he said. 

Legal action is being taken according to the customs law, he added.

In another drive, the CIID members seized 7,183 cartons of foreign brand cigarettes from 29 passengers of a Biman Bangladesh flight in the morning.

The cigarettes, worth about Tk1.44 crore, were recovered from 29 separate shopping bags from the flight which came from Madina, CIID Assistant Commissioner Mohammad Readul Islam said.

The passengers have been detained for interrogation, he added.
