Update : 19 Nov 2019, 11:11 PM

There are no chances of salt crisis in the country, Nurul Kabir, the president of Bangladesh Salt Mill Owners Association (BSMOA) has said.

"A vested quarter is spreading rumour about the salt crisis only to mislead people," he told Dhaka Tribune on Tuesday. "Currently, there is no shortage of salt in the country.

"We have 600,000 tons of rock salt in store, which can sustain the country for the next three months," Nurul said.

The president of BSMOA added: "At present, there is more than optimum amount of salt for the whole country. Moreover, the locally produced salt will hit the market within 10-15 days.

"So, there is no chance of a salt crisis,” he said.

According to the information by the salt mill owners of Chittagong, there are 80 salt mills in Chaktai and Majhirghat areas of Chittagong and the current reserve at the salt mills stands at 70,000-80,000 tons.

Usually the locally produced salt is stocked in April-May of the year and the reserve sustain till December when new production hit the market, said the salt mill owners.

Earlier, there was a mad rush to stock up on salt as rumours of increases in salt prices spread.
