Strong current in Padma River has washed way another jetty at the Daulatdia end of Manikganj's Paturia-Daulatdia route disrupting ferry services.
The river swallowed as many as three jetties out of six, with the last one going underwater on Thursday, while the other two jetties and its surrounding area were washed away on October 1, said Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) official Moqbul Hossain.
Disruption in ferry services caused a huge tailback, as over 600 vehicles remain stranded on both sides of the river, he added.
Passenger vehicles are given preference to cross the river as half of the jetties went underwater.
BIWTA (Aricha region) Deputy General Manager Md Zillur Rahman said the shortage of jetties has caused a crisis of pontoons to load, and unload vehicles from the ferries.
Five out of 16 ferries have remained anchored, he added.
If the river erosion continues, operating ferries at the Daulatdia end will be difficult in the coming days, warned Hossain, a deputy-assistant engineer of BIWTA.
