Police arrested two people from the Rajnagar Bandhupara village in the Nalitabari upazila of Sherpur for their alleged involvement in torturing a 14-year-old boy over a theft charge on Tuesday.

The arrested were identified as Ishak Mia, 30 and Rabiul Mia, 20, sons of Abdus Salam of the village.

Police produced them before the court Tuesday afternoon, seeking a 7-day remand for each.

Judicial Magistrate Mohsina Hossain set Sunday for the remand hearing and sent them to the district jail.

Nalitabari police station OC Bashir Ahmed Badal said the teenage boy was tied to a coconut tree and beaten mercilessly for allegedly stealing a mobile phone on Sunday. Later, the boy was taken to the Upazila Health Complex.

When a video of the torture went viral on social media, Sherpur Superintendent of Police Kazi Ashraful Azim visited the spot and the boy in the hospital yesterday.

With his intervention, Nalitabari police station recorded a case with the boy’s grandfather as the plaintiff.

Nalitabari police OC Bashir Ahmed said: “Already two men were arrested and jailed. We are identifying the rest of the suspects from the video clip.”
