Lighter ship capsizes with 1,100 tons coal in Bay of Bengal

All 12 crew members of the ship has been rescued

A lighter vessel, with 12 crew members onboard, has capsized in Bay of Bengal, near Sangu Gas Field in Chittagong.

Heraparbat 8, the vessel, was transporting 1,100 tons of coal from Chittagong to Dhaka, when it capsized around 8am on Thursday, Ataul Kabir, joint secretary of Water Transport Cell (WTC), said. It capsized 20km off the Karnaphuli estuary. 

WTC coordinates the movement of individually owned lighter vessels in Chittagong and nearby areas.

All 12 crew members of the ship were rescued by nearby boatmen, Nabi Alam, general secretary of Bangladesh Lighterage Workers Union said .

The vessel capsized due to the strong currents in the sea because of the rough weather.
