An eighth grader has been punched to death by his classmate at a school in Sylhet.
The incident took place at Kasim Ali Government Model High School in Fenchuganj upazila around 1:30pm on Thursday.
The deceased is Majedul Islam, 13, son of Altoma Ali, a resident of Mollikpur village in the upazila.
Police said Majedul, and his classmate Saiful Islam, 14, locked into an argument over sitting on the first bench in the classroom.
Saiful, son of Amir Ali, is a resident of Monurtuk village.
At one stage, Saiful gave him a sharp blow, and Majedul fell to the ground unconscious.
He was immediately taken to Fenchuganj Upazila Health Complex, where the on duty physician declared him dead.
Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Md Aminul Islam of Special Branch of police in Sylhet said they detained Saiful in connection with the incident.
The body of Majedul was sent to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College and Hospital morgue for autopsy, he added.
