Three people, including an assistant sub inspector (ASI), have been killed and two others injured by an accident on Dhaka-Chittagong highway.
The accident happened at Baburchi Bazar Syedpur area in Chauddagram upazila of Comilla district around 5am on Monday.
The deceased ASI Akter Hossain of Chauddagram Mia Bazar highway police outpost hailed from Barura upazila of the same district.
The other deceased were the helpers of a covered van -- Sumon, son of Babul from Nandi village in Chandraganj upazila of Lakshmipur district and Fahad, son of Saleh Ahmed from Senbag upazila of Noakhali district.
Mia Bazar highway police outpost In-Charge Abul Kalam Azad said: "A police wrecker was conducting rescue work on the highway, when it was hit by a covered van coming from the opposite side.
"The wrecker then hit a police van alongside the road, injuring the ASI who was standing beside it."
The ASI was rushed to Chauddagram Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
The accident left the wrecker's driver and helper injured, who have been sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for treatment.
Police have recovered the bodies and the vehicles.
