A tiger at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Safari Park in Gazipur has died after it consumed a monitor lizard, according to the park authorities.
On Monday afternoon, the park authorities found the animal dead inside the section for the tigers, said acting supervisor of the park Tabibur Rahman.
He said: "The tiger ate a monitor lizard a week ago and subsequently stopped taking any meals after that. SInce the animal wouldn’t take any food, it became very weak.
"We had also sedated the tiger in order to provide it with necessary treatments. But in spite of all our efforts, the animal could not recover," he said.
"We found the tiger lying dead on the premises of the Core Safari Park on Monday noon. We suspect it was the consumption of the monitor lizard, which lead to the illness and finally death of the animal. However, it could also have been bitten by a poisonous snake," he added.
Sreepur upazila's Livestock official Ukil Uddin said: "Following the autopsy of the tiger, body samples have been sent to Central Disease Investigation Laboratory in Dhaka. The report may help us determine the actual cause of death, and see whether the tiger died due to food poisoning. "
