A suspected drug trader has been killed in a reported gunfight with Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) in Jessore.
The incident occurred in Agrabhulot area along the border of Sharsha upazila early Saturday.
The deceased has been identified as Sujon, 28, from Kagojpukur village of the upazila.
Abdur Rahim Howladar, in-charge of Baghachra Police Investigation Centre in Sharsha upazila, told Dhaka Tribune that a BGB patrol team was making rounds near the border area when they were confronted by a gang of drug traders, who were smuggling phensedyl through the border.
When they faced the team, the drug traders hurled bombs at the BGB members, critically injuring BGB sergeant Akmal Hossain.
The patrol team detained two drug peddlers and based upon their information, went on another drive to Agrabhulot area.
But when they reached Agrabhulot, the associates of the two drug peddlers fired at the BGB members, forcing them to strike back in self-defence. One of them, Sujon, was hit by a bullet in the gunfight.
The rest of the gang fled.
.Later, BGB searched the area and seized 300 bottles of phensedyl from the spot. Police went to the crime scene and sent Sujon's body to Jessore General Hospital.
The injured BGB member sergeant Akmal Hossain was first taken to Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Jessore Cantonment and then transferred to Dhaka.
