The Forest Department has imposed a 65-day ban on fishing in all canals in the Sundarbans from July 1 to August 31, to ensure the safe breeding and preservation of fish and other marine animals.
This fishing ban has been imposed immediately after the end of a 65-day ban on fishing in the Bay of Bengal that ended with the last day of the month, June 30, reports UNB.
Officials said fishing will remain prohibited in nearly 400 canals to ensure safe breeding and preservation of fish and stop illegal fishing using poison. Canals more than 25 feet in width will remain free of the ban, they added.

East Sundarban's Chandpai Range Officer Md Shahin Kabir said all the fishermen were informed about the ban earlier. However, limited passes will be provided for fishing in larger waterways.
Sundarban Management Committee, Community Patrol Group (CPG), Village Tiger Response Teams (VTRT), and Wild Team, will work to implement the ban alongside the Forest Department.
However, local fishermen have expressed frustration with the authorities concerned having imposed the ban without arranging any alternative means of livelihood for them.
