The Forest Department seized around four maunds of venison, skin, and the heads of two deers, and two sacks of traps from Patharghata upazila of Barguna, early on Friday.
"They also seized a fishing trawler which was being used for smuggling the banned contraband," said Md Bodiuzzaman Sohag, forest department beat officer for Char Lathimara. They were unable to apprehend anyone in this connection, he said.
"Forest officials raided Padma village around 3:00am upon information that a gang with a trawler was waiting in a canal near the Bonoful Abason project to smuggle the venison, skin, and deer heads," he said.
The smugglers managed to flee the scene leaving behind the seized items, he added.
The Forest Department informed police, who are looking for Abdur Rahman of the village, who is suspected of being involved in the smuggling, according to locals.
The two chopped up dead deers were handed over to Patharghata police.
A case has been filed in this connection with Patharghata Police Station.
