Two people have been killed in separate reported gunfights in the Comilla and Chittagong districts of the country.
The incidents took place early on Tuesday.
In Comilla, a suspected drug trader was killed in a reported gunfight with Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) members, on the Golabari border area of Comilla Sadar upazila.
The deceased, Abdul Malek, was from Noapara village of Chauddagram upazila of the district. BGB recovered 29,860 yaba pills from the spot.
Confirming the matter to the Dhaka Tribune, BGB 10 Commander Lt Colonel Abu Mohammad Mohiuddin said: "Based on a tip-off, a BGB team, led by BGB 10 Havildar A Mannan, conducted a raid in a place named Jaluapara—which is two metres within Bangladesh's boundary—when the shooting occurred.
A drug trader was injured in the gunfight; he was then taken to Comilla Medical College Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead. He is at the morgue for autopsy."
In Chittagong, a murder suspect was killed in a reported gunfight with police near Agrabad area of the city.
The deceased is Jabed, a Jubo League activist accused of murdering former Chhatra League leader Mohiuddin Sohel, reports UNB.
Sudip Kumar Das, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Double Mooring police station, said, based on information that a gang of miscreants was taking drugs on Jamburi field, a team of police conducted a drive.
He added that upon seeing the police, the miscreant opened fire on them, forcing them to fire back, leaving Jabed shot.
Later, he was taken to Chittagong Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead.
Ashikur Rahman, senior assistant commissioner of Chittagong Metropolitan Police, said that after spotting Jabed, a team of police, led by the OC, conducted a drive around 12:20am, reports UNB. The OC was also shot on his right leg and is now undergoing treatment at the hospital.
The police team recovered a pistol and arms with several rounds of bullets from the spot.
Previously, on January 7, the former Chhatra League leader Mohiuddin Sohel was lynched by an angry mob at Pahartali Railway Market of the city for alleged extortion.
Sohel's family members later claimed at a press briefing that his murder was premeditated.
Shakirul Islam Shishir, Sohel's younger brother, filed a case with Double Mooring Police Station accusing 27 named and 150 unnamed people. Jabed was one of the main accused on the case.
