Four children among 13 killed in road crashes

At least 13 people including four children were killed and several others injured in separate road accidents occurred across the country on Friday. Of them, 10 were including five members of a family were killed and four others sustained injuries when a cement-laden truck carrying them fell into a roadside ditch on Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway at Meherabari in Bhaluka around 3:35am. Nine died on the spot while another declared dead at the Upazila Health Complex. The deceased include Azizul Islam, 40, his wife Razia Khatun, 25, and three sons Mahedi Hasan, 11, Mizan, 8, and Sizan,3. The injured were admitted to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital. Road crashes are a commonplace in Bangladesh, for which experts put blame on inefficient and unauthorised drivers and reckless driving among other reasons. According to a report, at least 3,412 people were killed and 8,572 others injured in 2,998 road accidents in 2016. Of the casualties, 470 were women and 453 were children, says the report by National Committee to Protect Shipping, Roads and Railways. The number of dead was 6,823 people in 2015. Meanwhile, a couple was killed in a road accident and their son injured after a pickup van hit their motorcycle from behind in Kaliganj area of Satkhira around 12:30pm. Abed Ali, 48, and his wife Amena Bagum, 45, were on way to the Upazila Sadar along with their son Abdul, Kaliganj Officer-in-Charge Laskar Jayedul Haque told the Dhaka Tribune. “The woman died on the spot. Abed Ali died while undergoing treatment at Satkhira Sadar Hospital,” he added. In Jhenaidah, a grade I student was killed while riding a bicycle in front of Abdul Khaleque College in Sadar area. Seven-year-old Sagor Ahmed was hit by an improvised vehicle, locally known as Alam Sadhu, around 10am while going to Nagar Bathan from his house, OC Harendra Nath Sarker told the Dhaka Tribune.
