Two four-year-old children were killed and their mothers injured in a road accident in Dinajpur’s Ghoraghat while traveling home to celebrate Eid with their families.

The accident occurred early Thursday morning on the Dinajpur-Gobindaganj highway in the Kanagari Bazar area of the upazila.

The deceased were identified as Abdullah, son of Shamsul Haque of Panchbibi upazila in Joypurhat, and Arifa, daughter of Al Amin of Baro Aria area in Hakimpur upazila of Dinajpur. The injured women are Dulali Begum and Farida Begum.

According to police and local sources, continuous rainfall since dawn had reduced visibility on the highway. Amid poor weather, a CNG-run autorickshaw was travelling at high speed. When it reached the Kanagari Bazar area on its way from Gobindaganj to Bhaduria, the vehicle crashed into the rear of a truck parked beside the road. The autorickshaw overturned, leaving its passengers seriously injured.

Police and locals rescued the victims and took them to Ghoraghat Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared the two children dead. The injured women were later referred to Dinajpur Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.

Officer-in-Charge of Ghoraghat Police Station Shahidul Islam said the bodies of the children were handed over to their families after legal formalities were completed. The truck involved in the accident fled the scene after the crash.
