Three women, including a mother-daughter duo, have been hospitalized after a UP member attacked them with a mob when they asked for money lent for election financing back.

The incident took place in Patakata village in Barguna sadar upazila on Sunday.

In the words of Sumona – one of the victims – her mother Runa Begum had lent Tk3 lakh to Md Ilias before the UP elections.

When she accompanied her mother and aunt Helena to meet with Ilias on Sunday morning, who was elected as UP member, they discussed repaying the loan.

Ilias grew agitated at their demands and beat up Sumona in broad daylight.

But his anger had not been abated.

Around 8:30pm Sunday night, a group of 10-12 thugs led by Ilias stormed Sumona’s house and stabbed the three women. Sumona said she could name Sajib, Sujon, Sagor, Saiful, Rabib, Rakib, Arif, and Riaz among the people who assaulted them.

Afterwards, they were rescued by locals and admitted to Barguna General Hospital.

When contacted, Ilias denied all allegations and hung up the phone. He has since been avoiding phone calls from the Dhaka Tribune.

Barguna police station Officer-in-Charge Abir Mohammad Hossain said the police has not taken any action because no written complaints have been filed.
