Chhatra League infighting at CU leaves 10 injured

The fight has taken place over the alleged abduction of a Chhatra League leader

Update : 23 Feb 2019, 08:58 PM

At least 10 people were injured in a clash between two factions of Bangladesh Chhatra League on Chittagong University (CU) campus over the alleged abduction of a leader on Friday night.

Supporters of two groups — Ulka and 69, both shuttle-train based Chhatra League groups — attacked each other and blasted handmade bombs on the campus leaving at least 10 students injured.

The clash ensued between the two factions at Zero point and Gate No 1 areas on the campus around 10:30pm Friday, after a news spread that Golam Rasul Nishan, vice-president of the defunct Chhatra League committee who also belongs to Ulka group, was abducted from the port city’s Lalkhan Bazar area, said Md Akhtaruzzaman, the in-charge of CU police camp.

The Ulka group activists claimed 69 group’s vice-president Mansur Alam, publications affairs secretary Iqbal Tipu and joint secretary Abu Torab had picked up Nishan around 10:30pm and released him around 12:30am Saturday.

However, Mansur denied the allegation and said: "We do not know about the abduction incident and learned it from Facebook posts. If anyone blame us, I must say it was done out of vengeance."
