A day labourer died on Tuesday after a piece of dredging piping fell on him in the Sultan Nagar EPZ area in the district.
The deceased was identified as Nazrul Islam, son of Hasmat Ali Khan of Sultan Nagar village.
According to police sources, Nazrul was working in a field in the area on Monday afternoon while the workers of MM Builders Ltd, a construction firm, were lifting sand from the nearby Bamunjhi water body. Suddenly a piece of dredging pipe fell on Nazrul leaving him critically injured.
He was admitted to Mymensingh Medical College after the incident where he died on Tuesday morning.
After learning of the incident, locals demonstrated in the area protesting the death, and demanded compensation for it.
They also demanded exemplary punishment of the authorities of the construction firm and urged the administration to stop illegal sand removal from the water body.
Narayanpur police outpost SI, Abdul Latif, confirmed the incident.
Meanwhile, MM Builders Ltd authorities announced compensation of Tk4 lakh to the family of Nazrul, said the OC.
