Road crashes kill 9 in five districts

The accidents take place in Comilla, Panchagarh, Jessore, Brahmanbaria and Kurigram

At least nine people were killed in separate road accidents in five districts across the country on Sunday.

In Comilla, five people died and 10 others injured in an accident in Chauddagram upazila in the morning.

The deceased were identified as China Hizra, 50, Hashi Begum, 40, Aslam Mollah, 50, Salam Mia, 52, and Anwar Hossain, 45.

Mia Bazar highway police outpost’s In-Charge Monjurul Alam said a bus collided with a truck on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway around 6am.

“Four people were killed on the spot, and the other died while being taken to Comilla Medical College Hospital,” he said.

The injured were admitted to a local hospital.

In Panchagarh, an elderly man died after being run over by a truck on the Panchagarh-Tetulia Highway in front of Panchagarh Sadar Hospital in the afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Shamsul Haque, 60, of Sadar upazila’s Saheb Bazar area.

Traffic police Inspector Munir Ahmed said Shamsul was crushed to death by the truck when he was on way to visit his ailing son at a local hospital.

In Jessore, a man was killed after being hit by a covered van on the Jessore-Magura Road in Sadar upazila’s Bahadurpur area around 9am Sunday.

The deceased was identified as Asmot Ali, 50, of the upazila.

Kotwali police station Sub-Inspector (SI) Sobhan Sharif said Asmot was run over and killed on the spot when he was crossing the road on a bicycle.

In Brahmanbaria, an auto-rickshaw driver died on the spot after another three-wheeler collided head-on with his vehicle on the Dhaka-Sylhet Highway in Bijoynagar upazila in the morning, said Khatihata Highway police station SI Monirul Islam.

The man is yet to be identified.

In Kurigram, a motorcyclist died after another two-wheeler of a policeman crashed with his vehicle in Nageshwari upazila’s Patari Mosque area on Sunday afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Atiqur Rahman Dipu of Bhurungamari upazila.

Nageshwari police station OC Zakir-Ul Islam said Bhurungamari police station SI Minhaz had crashed into Atiqur’s motorcycle on the Kurigram-Bhurungamari Road, leaving the latter dead on the spot.

Minhaz was also seriously injured in the accident, said Zakir.
