The Director General (DG)of Bureau of Non-Formal Education Tapon Kumar Ghosh defined education as incorporation of several topics, not merely placing a signature but reading, writing and calculation as well.
"The definition of literacy has now changed. There was a time when literacy meant a person's ability of placing a signature. But now the definition of literacy incorporates three things -- reading, writing and doing simple arithmetic," said the DG.
He came up with the remarks while inaugurating an adult literacy session for mothers at the East Tigerpass Colony area in Chittagong on Sunday.
Speaking as the chief guest at the inaugural ceremony, the DG said: "The country's current literacy rate is 72 percent it means that 28 percent people are still illiterate. The illiterate people have to be educated through adult and uninterrupted education."
The adult literacy centre is a part of a project undertaken by the Bureau of Non-Formal Education.
Ghashful, a non-government organization is implementing the project styled "Second Chance Education".
Zulfiqur Amin, assistant director, District Bureau of Non-Formal Education said, "In addition to learning from textbooks, adult students have the opportunity to receive different vocational training. On completion of training, the mothers can take up income generating activities and achieve solvency bringing prosperity to their families."
Aftabur Rahman Jafree, Chief Executive Officer of Ghashful also spoke as the special guest on the occasion.
