A shopkeeper filed a complaint with the Cabinet Division secretary on Wednesday against the deputy commissioner (administration) of Bandarban for assaulting him over littered garbage.
On 4 January, the Deputy Commissioner (DC) Md Daudul Islam visited a government building - Meghla Tourist Complex - and assaulted a shopkeeper, Benoy Lal Tanchanga, after he found garbage stacked beside the shops.
While the assault was carried out, Daudul’s bodyguard Foyez Ahmed tried to stop the DC repeatedly.
The complainant, Benoy Lal Tanchanga, said: "Sir [Daudul Islam] asked me why the area is dirty. After I told him that the tourists litter the place but we burn the garbage every evening. He asked, who gave us permission to set up shop here and started attacking me."
“That evening, I received treatment from resident medical officer (RMO) Dr Mang Usha Thoi of the Bandarban Sadar Hospital,” Benoy said.
A witness to the incident, Raiya Tanchanga, said: “Sir kicked and punched Benoy Lal Tanchangya. To save him, we were holding onto his legs but he did not stop. At one stage, Benoy fell unconscious.”
When contacted, Deputy Commissioner Md Daudul Islam did not receive the call.
However, he denied the allegations and told the local journalists: “If I wanted to hurt someone, I would have informed the police. I have come here to work, I did not come here to hurt people.”
According to the complaint filed on January 23, it has been reported that for the last 20 years, with the permission of the district administration, a few locals were rented out shops inside the Meghla Tourist Complex premises.
