Dhaka University (DU) authorities have appointed five returning officers to help the chief returning officer for the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) elections as well as the hall union polls.
The appointments were given on Saturday.
Also, a seven-member committee led by DU Pro Vice-Chancellor (VC) (Academic) Nasreen Ahmad, is to formulate a code of conduct for the candidates.
Two separate press releases were issued by DU Public Relations Officer Mahmood Alam, which said DU VC Prof M Akhtaruzzaman appointed the five officers and formed the committee to cooperate with the chief returning officer.
The Chief Returning Officer, Professor SM Mahfuzur Rahman of the International Business Department, was appointed on Thursday to direct the Ducsu and hall union polls.
The returning officers are: Soil, Water and Environment Department Chairman Prof Md Didar-Ul-Alam; Mathematics Department Chairman Prof Amal Krishna Halder; Institute of Disaster Management and Vulnerable Studies Director Prof Mahbuba Nasreen; Professor of Islamic History and Culture Dr Abdul Bashir, and Computer Science and Engineering Department Chairman Dr Md Mustafizur Rahman.
The pro VC led committee members are: Dean of Earth and Environmental Sciences Faculty Prof ASM Maksud Kamal; Dean of Arts Faculty Prof Abu Md Delwar Hosain; Dean of Law Faculty Prof Dr Md Rahmat Ullah; Dean of Social Science Faculty Prof Sadeka Halim; Economics Department Prof Mahbubul Mokaddem (MM Akash), Television, Film and Photography Department Prof Dr Abu Jafar Md Shafiul Alam Bhuiyan.
Recent timeline of Ducsu election preparations
As part of election preparations, DU authorities sat with the 15 active, campus based student organizations on September 16 last year which was called “Paribesh Parishader Sabha”(Environment Council Meeting)”.
On that day the VC, at a press briefing, said: “The Ducsu polls might be held by March 2019.”
On October 31 last year, DU published the long awaited database (draft voter list) of hall-based students for the polls which have been dysfunctional for the last 28 years.
Among 38,493 voters, 14,509 voters are female and 23,984 are male.
On January 6, the Supreme Court cleared the way for holding the Ducsu polls by annulling its earlier order that stayed a High Court order asking the DU authorities to take necessary steps within the next six months to hold the election.
A five-member committee led by Prof Md Mizanur Rahman, took suggestions from student organization representatives regarding the amendments of the Ducsu constitution and announced the deadline extension till January 14, at a meeting held on January 10.
The DU authority also held a meeting with all 22 Teacher Student Centre (TSC) based socio-cultural organizations of the university on January 17 to exchange views about the Ducsu polls.
They also invited the Dhaka University Journalists’ Association on January 20 for a discussion.
DU has also called a second meeting of the “Paribesh Parishader Sabha at 11am on January 21, at the Abdul Matin Virtual Classroom, beside the VC office.
