A trawler that capsized early Tuesday morning in the Meghna River at Munshiganj is still missing with 20 people on board.

Rescuers are yet to trace the whereabouts of the capsized boat, Zakir Dewan, which sank after colliding with a cargo vessel around 4am on Tuesday.

While visiting the scene of the accident on Thursday, Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) Chairman M Mozammel Haque said: “A team of divers from the navy will start working from this afternoon.”

Gajaria Naval Police Outpost In-Charge Mizanur Rahman said: “We are working according to information given by those who survived the accident. More rescuers will be working from today (Thursday).”

“BIWTA is using its own equipment to continue the rescue mission,” said Gajaria UNO Hasan Sadi.

The soil-laden trawler was going to Naryanganj from Comilla when the accident took place. Most of those on board were sleeping at the time. Only 14 of the 34 men, who are mostly laborers, managed to escape the sinking boat.
