Another journalist arrested in Digital Security case

He was sent to jail hours after the case was filed

A journalist from Khagrachhari was arrested and sent to jail in a case filed under the Digital Security Act.

Nurul Azam, the local correspondent for bdnews24.com and SATV, also the president of Khagrachhari Journalist Union, was arrested on Monday afternoon.

Khagrachhari Sadar Circle’s Additional Superintendent of Police Rownak Alam said the charge against Nurul was that he had posted a private photo of a woman on social media without consent.

“He is being charged under sections 29 and 31 of the Digital Security Act,” he said.

Nurul was arrested from in front of  Khagrachhari Journalist Union office. He was presented at the court of Judicial Magistrate Senjuti Jannat, and a seven-day interrogation was sought by the police.

The court did not hear the remand plea, and sent Nurul to jail.

Nurul’s wife Farzana Azam said the wife of another journalist had filed the complaint falsely with the intent of harassing Nurul, due to their enmity.

Khagrachhari Journalist Union Vice President Saikat Dewan and General Secretary Kanan Acharya condemned the president’s arrest.

“Journalists are alarmed by the arrest, which took place within hours of filing the case without any sort of investigation. We are demanding proper investigation from the prime minister and the information minister,” they said in a statement.
