Police have arrested Jiten Kumar Barua, Khagrachhari district correspondent of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) and Somoy TV.
He was arrested from Shapla Chattar in the district town at around 7pm on Thursday. He is a former president of the Khagrachhari Press Club.
Police said five cases had been filed against Jiten Barua in four police stations across the district. One of the cases was filed over an alleged attack on students and protesters during the July mass uprising on August 4, while the remaining four cases relate to clashes between leaders and activists of the Awami League and BNP.
All five cases were filed after August 5, 2024. Of them, two were filed with Sadar police station, while the other three were filed respectively with Dighinala, Matiranga and Panchhari police stations.
Officer-in-Charge of Khagrachhari Sadar Police Station, Kislu, said Jiten Barua had been in hiding since the cases were filed against him.
“Acting on specific information, he was arrested on Thursday. On seeing the police, he attempted to flee, but officers eventually managed to apprehend him,” the OC said.
