Anti-trafficking campaigner and Rights Jessore Executive Director Binoy Krishna Mallick got bail from a Narsingdi court Tuesday afternoon, nearly 22 hours after he was picked up by the police from Jessore.
Police picked him up from his home in Jessore town around 7pm Monday and started for Narsingdi in the midnight showing him arrested in a fraud case field with Shibpur police.
He was produced before the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate Chandan Kumar Nath around 5:30pm and the court granted his bail plea after a hearing.
After securing bail, Binoy started for Jessore.
Also a former president of Jessore Press Club, Binoy was held Monday only hours after making allegations of harassment against the district police superintendent, Anisur Rahman, from a press conference.
From a joint meeting Tuesday morning, local journalists demanded that he be released immediately. They also threatened to announce a stern movement if he had been harassed any further.
Binoy’s family members claimed that two police in uniform and 10-12 in plainclothes had dragged him out of the house and threatened others with guns for obstructing them. They also hurled abuses at Binoy at that time.
At the press conference, Binoy alleged that the SP was harassing him and his family ever since he had opposed the unfair eviction of businesses and businessmen from a government allotted land on Garikhana Road in the town.
In the latest, his son Sobuj Mallick was detained by plainclothes police, drugged and then handed over to Fultola police in Khulna on March 9.
The rights activist also apprehended that he could be arrested or abducted anytime for raising his voice.
