A youth has allegedly been stabbed by the Rajshahi University unit of Chhatra League while resisting a mugging.
The incident occurred on the Shabash Bangladesh field, on the university premises, on Thursday evening.
The injured is Tarek—an employee of a shop near the university's main gate—son of Aslam, from Dharampur in Motihar area of the city.
The university's police patrol team took Tarek to the university medical centre and handed him over to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital because he was in critical condition.
The injured Tarek said: "Imtiaz, along with two other men, tried to mug me on the field near the university premises. When I resisted, there was a scuffle; and then he stabbed me in my lower back."
The alleged attacker, Imtiaz Ahmed, organizing secretary of RU’s Chhatra League unit, denies the allegations and claims he was also stabbed.
He said: "Tarek was trying to mug two people at one corner of the field. Realizing what was happening, I went to the spot alone, when Tarek placed his knife on my throat. At one point, Tarek was injured when he stabbed himself.
Kajla police outpost Officer-in-Charge Md Mahbubur Rahman said: "Someone did stab Tarek, and he has not confessed about whether he went there to mug someone. We have sent him to the hospital. We will know the real story after he recovers."
When asked about the incident, Rajshahi University Chhatra League unit President, Golam Kibria, said: "Imtiaz caught Tarek during the mugging. There might have been a scuffle or fight between them. However I do not know anything about a stabbing."
