Inspector General of Police Md Javed Patwary said a new unit is being formed to coordinate with the police and prevent the circulation of rumours on social media.
He made the statement to reporters after the prize distribution ceremony following the IGP Cup police cricket championship final at Uttara’s APBN field on Saturday.
The IGP also said the unit was almost finalized, and would be complete once the Ministry of Finance cleared the funding for it.
“We even have the manpower ready, and are going to send them abroad for training,” he said.
He also said: “This cell will coordinate with the cyber crime unit to monitor all related matters. No one should get away with spreading rumours that create unrest.”
Dr Javed Patwary also said: “A few days ago, a rumour was spread in the garments sector about two or three people being killed and two missing, and people became antagonized and violent without vetting the information.
“Therefore, we are becoming careful so that no one can spread such rumours in the future to damage the state of law and order.”
