A ruling party member of parliament (MP) staged a sit-in in Nilphamari, demanding a Jubo League leader’s arrest for an attack on him at a program organized by the Awami League on National Mourning Day.
Prof Golam Mostafa, MP, of Nilphamari-3 constituency, accused Wahed Bahadur, former Jubo League president of Jaldhaka upazila, of verbal abuse and physical attacks on him on the day.
Sources said Mostafa staged his sit-in at the upazila’s Zero Point around 9pm on Wednesday and his supporters blocked several roads connecting Jaldhaka to Rangpur, Nilphamari, Domar, Dimla, and Panchagarh, as of 12:30 am on Thursday.
Later, Awami League Joint General Secretary, Jahangir Kabir Nanak, went to the scene and persuaded them to leave the streets, said Ruhul Amin, additional superintendent of police.
A SammilitaSangskritikJote committee had organised the discussion programme at Bangabandhu Chattar in Jaldhaka to mark National Mourning Day, when a clash took place during an open session with MP Golam Mostafa.
Bahadur came to the programme with his aides and began to abuse Mostafa verbally. The situation turned tense when the MP’s supporters moved forward.
Police and RAB rushed to the scene and stopped the programme.
Mostafa and his supporters took to the streets as soon as the programme was stopped.
“Wahed attacked me just the way MP Liton was attacked in Sundarganj. He is trying to tarnish my image. I have reported against him several times,” said Mostafa.
ASP Ruhul Amin said MP Mostafa’s security was beefed up after the incident.
