Transport workers have enforced an indefinite transport strike in 10 districts of Khulna division protesting bus driver Jamir Hossain’s life sentence in a case filed over Filmmaker Tareque Masud and Cinematographer Mishuk Muiner and three others’ death.
The strike began around 6am on Sunday.
Khulna regional committee of Bangladesh Road Transport Workers Federation declared the strike on Saturday.
“We are planning to declare countrywide strike if our demands are not met. A meeting will be held in this regard in Dhaka’s Motijheel area today [Sunday],” the federation’s Khulna regional committee secretary Abdur Rahim Baksh told the Dhaka Tribune.
One Abdur Rahman said: “I was planning to visit my relatives in Magura. I came to Sonadanga bus stand with my family but I have to return home due to the strike.”
Besides, four more workers’ unions have expressed solidarity with the transport strike.
A Manikganj court on Wednesday sentenced bus driver Jamir Hossain to life imprisonment in the case filed over the deaths of five people, including Tareque and Mishuk Munier, in 2011.
The fatal accident took place on August 13, 2011, on the Dhaka–Aricha highway at Ghior upazila in Manikganj.
