Criminal killed in ‘gunfight’ with police in Maheshkhali

A suspected criminal called Abdul Malek, 35, has been killed in an alleged gunfight with police, in the Maheshkhali upazila of Cox’s Bazar.

The incident occurred in the Shaplapur area of the upazila around 11am Monday. 

Police recovered five local weapons, 40 litres of illegal local wine, and 500 yaba pills from the location.

According to police, they received a tip-off about a “gunfight” happening between two groups of criminals, on a hill in the area. Upon seeing the police, the criminals fired at them. Police fired back, and after the shooting ended Malek’s body was found. 

Maheshkhali police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Pradip Kumar Das said: “We have sent the body to Maheshkhali Health Complex. He has eight cases to his name, including charges of possessing illegal weapons.”
