Two, including a student, have died in a road accident in Raipura upazila of Narsingdi on Saturday.
Md Abdullah, 17, the student, was walking to Nilkuti bus-stand on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway when a Bhairab bound human hauler- locally known as "lagoona"- from Itakhola lost control and hit him in the Nilkuti bus-stand area.
He died on the spot. The hauler fell into a nearby ditch and caught fire. Police have detained the driver of the hauler.
Abdullah was a student of Class XI in Haji Asmat Ali College in Bhairab. He hailed from Jhartola area of Mahmudabad in Raipura upazila.
According to locals, Fazlur Rahman, 55, was also injured in the accident. He was taken to Jahurul Islam Medical College Hospital in Bhagalpur, Kishoreganj in critical condition. He died while under treatment, locals said.
Police have denied confirming the matter.
After the accident, enraged locals blocked the Dhaka-Sylhet highway from 10am.
They left the scene around 12:30pm after police and local representatives assured them of justice.
Police have detained the driver of the human hauler, but are yet to find out the driver's identity, Officer In-charge of Raipura police station Md Delowar Hossain, said.
Saturday's accident took place when the country is still reeling from the protests sparked by the death of two 12th-graders in a road accident on Airport Road in Dhaka on Sunday.
School and college students in Dhaka and across Bangladesh took to the streets during the entire week, demanding road safety and strict implementation of traffic laws.
