Seven people, including an infant, have been killed in an accident involving a bus and a human hauler in Barguna.
All of the deceased were passengers of the human hauler. Five of them have been identified as: Hanif Hawlader, the human hauler’s driver; Chan Mia, 48; Jashim Mridha,40; Shanu Hawlader, 40; and Salma Akter—an assistant teacher at Tarikata Government Primary School.
Locals say a Patuakhali-bound bus, from Kuakata, collided head-on with the human hauler, killing four people on the spot.
Five others were also injured in the accident which occurred at Amtoli Upazila’s Manikjuri, around 10:30am, on Thursday.
Two of them died at Amtali Upazila Health Complex, while the driver, Hanif, died after being taken to Pataukhali General Hospital.
Two of the injured – including one identified as Fahima – were sent to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital. They remain there in critical condition.
Amtali police station’s Officer-in-Charge (Investigation) Nurul Islam Badol said they had confiscated the bus. The driver and his assistant fled after the accident.
“Legal action will be taken,” he said.
