The installation of the fifth span of the Padma Bridge on the 41st and 42nd piers, in Munshiganj is under way.
“Since the weather is favourable the Seven S (super structure) span will be set up by Friday afternoon,” said Padma Bridge Assistant Engineer (main bridge) Ahmed Ahsan Ullah.
Earlier on Thursday, the span was taken to Jazira Point of the bridge, by floating crane Tian E, from the Mawa construction yard, in Munshiganj.
Engineers said 600 metres of the bridge were visible after the installation of the fourth span. The fifth span will add another 150 metres to the bridge.
They further said each span of the bridge is 150 metres long and weighs 3,140 tons. A total of 41 spans will be installed on 42 piers.
As many as 40 of the 42 piers will be above water; the remaining two will be installed on the river bank.
