Update : 29 May 2018, 04:29 PM

A 22-year-old has died in the lockup of a police station in Jashore, hours after he was taken into custody for interrogation in a murder case.

But Bagharpara police claim Tonmoy Kundu committed suicide on Monday evening.

Tonmoy and his mother are accused of killing Asadul, 52, an office assistant of Narikelbaria Paschim Madrasa, who was found murdered on May 11. Asadul’s wife Lucky Begum named Alpona and her son as the two primary accused in the case she filed the next day.

The mother-son duo and two other suspects were in police custody.

Sub-Inspector Shah Alam, who is investigating the case, said they had taken Tonmoy on remand for a day.

“We found him groaning in the toilet with a blanket wrapped around his neck after iftar,” the SI said. “He was pronounced dead by Bagharpra Upazila Health Complex doctors when we took him there.”

Dr Israt Naznin of the health complex said the youth had died before he was brought in.

Bagharpara police’s Officer-in-Charge Monjurul Alam and SI Alam claimed Tonmoy had killed himself.

“He committed suicide because the evidence points to his involvement in the murder,” Alam said.
