Shumi Khatun, the 8-year-old girl who had her left arm amputated after suffering irreversible damage to it in a truck accident, is slated to receive a prosthetic arm.
District Administrator Md Nur-e-Alam Siddiqui discussed the matter with parties concerned.
Shumi has been a patient at the surgery department of Shahid Ziaur Rahman Medical College since April 22. Hospital authorities are giving her all the treatment necessary, with the district administrator and other citizens carrying the expenses.
Shumi, the daughter of rickshaw van driver Dulal Khan who hails from the Fultola Dokkhinpara area of Sherpur upazila, is a Class I student of a local BRAC school. On April 22, she set out to attend a gathering at a relative’s house with her father. On the way, she was hit by a truck while trying to cross a highway on her own. The impact left her grievously injured and her left hand dismembered.
Apart from checking up on her condition, the district administrator has also provided Tk20,000 for her treatment, with Cooperative Bank Chairman and District Jubo League General Secretary Aminul Islam Dablu providing another Tk10,000.

Assistant Director of Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Dr Nirmalendu Chowdhury said: “Shumi is currently out of danger. She will undergo surgery on her right arm in a few days. The hospital is providing everything the child needs. She should be alright within three weeks.”
“Shumi will undergo another surgery in about a month. After that, she will be sent to Dhaka Pongu Hospital. The matter has been discussed and finalized, and we are arranging for her to receive a prosthetic arm,” said District Administrator Nur-e-Alam.
“Tk3 lakh is required for the next few procedures and subsequent rehabilitation. At this moment, any financial support given to her family will not help Shumi. She will be given support in due time,” he added.
Meanwhile, despite a three-day search, Sherpur police have not been able to apprehend the truck driver involved in the incident. Sherpur police station OC Bulbul Islam said: “Shumi’s uncle Badshah Khan filed a case against the anonymous truck driver. The truck is in police custody, and soon the driver will be as well.”
