When four months apart is too much for the heart

Update : 30 Mar 2018, 01:32 AM
Not many love stories involve two nationalities, three countries, four years together and then four months apart. But one Bangladeshi man who met his future wife abroad can thank the age-old  maxim “distance makes the heart grow fonder” for his enduring relationship with a girl from another land. Rubel Ahmed, of Anantapur Matherpar village from Fulbari in Kurigram, had moved to Singapore for a job. While working in a glass factory, he met Tofaiya Yasmeen. Anyone can imagine what happened next. Sparks flew and violins played in the background. There were candlelit dinners, moonlit walks; the whole package.

Four years they spent together in love. But late last year, Rubel had to come back to Bangladesh on holiday. Four months passed since Tofaiya had last seen him. Eventually, her heart grew too heavy and so she flew to Bangladesh. The modest family of Rubel was taken aback by a Filipino girl baring her heart to them, just as she had bared her soul to the man she loves. Without a single dissenting voice, their union was accepted and blessed by the family.

A swift court marriage followed, and the reception is set to be held on May 25. A fortnight after that, the happily-married couple will return to Singapore. Rubel’s father, Belal Hossain, said he approved of the relationship and had sanctioned the marriage. “I am a simple farmer,” he said. “My son’s wellbeing is my wellbeing. They are two adults who like each other. I hope everyone prays for their happiness.”
