A sexagenarian man has been detained after he attempted to rape a 10-year-old girl at Hazirhat in Boalkhali upazila of Chittagong.
Locals caught the culprit, former government employee Abul Kalam, 62, and handed him over to police. A case has been filed over the incident.
According to the case statement, Abul took the girl to a house he built on the banks of a large pond in Hazirhat on Sunday afternoon, when she had been going to a tailoring shop, and tried to rape her there.
When the victim began screaming, locals rushed to the scene and rescued her.
They also caught Abul, made him parade through the area with a garland of shoes around his neck, and handed him over to police after a mass beating.
Boalkhali police station OC Himangshu said they had produced the culprit before a court.
