Police have arrested a vice-president of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology’s (SUST’s) Bangladesh Chhatra League unit over a factional clash on Tuesday that left a student wounded by a gunshot.
Furthermore, Chhatra League has expelled two members of its SUST unit and suspended 10 others involved in the clash, said a press release signed by Central Chhatra League President Saifur Rahman and General Secretary SM Zakir Hossain issued on Wednesday.
Chhatra League SUST unit Vice President Syed Juyem was picked up from the university campus on Wednesday night, said Jalalabad police station OC Shafiqul Islam.
Syed was also among the 10 men who were suspended by Chhatra League. The others who were suspended are unit Joint General Secretary Ashraful Alam Antu, Organising Secretary Dolan Ahmed, Deputy Liberation War Affairs Secretary Laksan Chandra Barman, and members Munkar Kazi, Toufiqur Rahman Tanmay, Basir Miah, Meher Uddin Himel, Raihan Ahmed and Shariful Malik Sharif.
In addition, Central Committee members Abu Sayeed Akanda and Sazidul Islam Sabuj were the two who were expelled by Chhatra League over the clash.
Earlier on Wednesday, Tariqul Islam, another vice-president of the Chhatra League SUST unit, filed a case against 10 named Chhatra League members, including Syed and Antu, and 10 unnamed others over the clash between two factions of the ruling party’s student wing to establish dominance on the campus on Tuesday.
SM Abdullah Rony, a student of the Food Engineering and Tea Technology Department of SUST who was a bystander, was injured when he was shot in the leg during the dispute.
