Voting underway in Brahmanbaria 1 by-polls

Update : 13 Mar 2018, 01:19 PM
More than 200,000 voters are expected to exercise their franchise to choose their representative in the Brahmanbaria by-elections. Voting began at 8am on Tuesday and would continue until 4pm without any break. Voter turnout was low at the beginning. Election officials said they hoped the turnout would increase as the day progressed. Brahmanbaria 1 seat fell vacant after the death of Awami League leader and Fisheries and Livestock minister Sayedul Hoque on December 16. Members of Rapid Action Battalion, Border Guard Bangladesh, police and Ansar have been deployed at polling centres to ensure smooth balloting. Bodruddoza M Farhad Hossain of Awami League, Rezwan Ahmed of Jatiya Party and Abul Kashem Mohammad Asraful Haque of Islami Oikya Jote are vying for the constituency. A total of 214,009 people -- 110,410 male and 103,599 female -- are expected to cast their votes. A total of 39 mobile teams (three in each union) are discharging their duties at 13 unions of the constituency. Additional security measures have been taken at 49 risky polling centres.
