Former lawmaker of Chittagong-7 constituency and valiant freedom fighter Mohammad Yusuf has passed away at the age of 69.
Mohammad Sekander, younger brother of Mohammad Yusuf told the Dhaka Tribune that his brother breathed his last while undergoing treatment at the Combined Military Hospital in Dhaka at 8:20am on Sunday.
A pall of gloom descended on the political arena of the port city, as the news of the Yusuf’s demise reached the residents of Chittagong city.
Mayor of Chittagong City Corporation AJM Nasir Uddin expressed deep shock at the demise of the veteran politician.
A leader of the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB), Yusuf contested in the fifth national parliamentary elections in 1991 with electoral symbol “Boat” from Rangunia constituency.
He became a lawmaker by defeating war criminal SQ Chowdhury’s brother Giash Uddin Quader Chowdhury.
Born in 1949, Yusuf became involved with Chhatra Union while studying at Rangunia College. He joined Karnaphuli Paper Mill as a clerk in 1973. He later became associated with the CPB politics.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed deep shock at the death of Mohammad Yusuf.
PM Hasina had earlier directed authorities concerned that proper treatment be ensured to Yusuf after news of his poor health and living conditions went viral on different social media.
The veteran politician was then admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital on January 7 and later on January 9, he was shifted to Dhaka CMH for better treatment.
Yusuf was suffering from paralysis on one side of his body since 2007.
