A con artist from Mymensingh has been arrested and sent to jail for impersonating the religion minister and other government officials to scam people.
Swapan Mondol, a 35-year-old man, was arrested Sunday night from Bhaluka by a team from the Detective Branch of police. He was produced before a district court on Tuesday morning.
According to Superintendent of Police Syed Nurul Islam, a crime ring was running a scam for the past few months. The criminals involved impersonated the voice of Minister of Religious Affairs Motiur Rahman and the personal secretary of local MP Dr Amanullah. They promised promotions and lucrative transfers in exchange for money to government employees all over Mymensingh.
On September 19, Swapan conned Gafargaon upazila Project Implementation Officer Rezaul Karim into paying Tk25,000 for a DO letter, Tk3.5 lakh for a plot of government land, and two checks of Tk17 lakh for various other expenses.
When Rezaul realized he had been had, he immediately complained to the police who set out to arrest Swapan.
A case was filed against Swapan with Bhaluka police station.
