A student of Sriramkathi UJK High School in Pirojpur physically assaulted his teacher last week after becoming president of the school’s Chhatra League committee.
The teacher’s “crime” was to catch Shah Amanat Shanto cheating in a Secondary School Certificate preparatory examination, and to protest against drug abuse.
Chhatra League, the student front of ruling Awami League, abolished the school committee on Thursday, only days after forming it amid widespread criticism and apprehension that the move could fuel student-led political violence.
The school suspended Shanto after Wednesday evening’s attack on Santosh Dewri.
Shanto, along with Mehrab, Tonmoy and two others, barged into the teacher’s house at Sriramkathi union and beat him to a pulp.
Santosh was initially taken to Nazirpur Upazila Health Complex but was later shifted to Pirojpur Sadar Hospital for better treatment.
“Shanto is a drug addict. He has been harbouring ill motives against me for some time after I protested against his drug abuse, and caught him red-handed while cheating in the SSC test exam,” Santosh told the Dhaka Tribune.
Shanto’s father is Ali Haidar Mridha, the former president of the Sriramkathi Union Awami League unit.
Chhatra League’s Sriramkathi Union unit chief Nayem Hawlader said he had recommended Shanto’s suspension after the incident.
Nazirpur Upazila Chhatra League unit President Tanvir Hassan Dalim told the Dhaka Tribune that the school committee had been dissolved and its president was suspended.
Romendra Nath Mondol, the school’s headmaster, said an emergency meeting was held on Thursday evening where they demanded exemplary punishment of the culprits.
Chhatra League decided to form committees at high schools across the country on November 21 as part of its goal to “spread the ideology of Bangabandhu”.
